Tip 1 (Highly Recommended):

Rapid Fire:
Options / Controls / Fire Weapons 1-10

Set as follows:
Fire Weapon 1 - Empty (Nothing to be set)
Fire Weapon 2 - Empty (Nothing to be set)
Fire Weapon 3 - ` (under the Escape key)
Fire Weapon 4 - 1
Fire Weapon 5 - 2
Fire Weapon 6 - 3
Fire Weapon 7 - (Set whatever key you feel comfortable, to me is E)
Fire Weapon 8 - (Set whatever key you feel comfortable, to me is R)
Fire Weapon 9 - 9
Fire Weapon 10 - 10

Execution: Press 1 & 2 (in sequence) as quickly as possible and then press Fire (by holding it). If you stop holding your fire, you'll have to perform the action again.
For more: "Freelancer: Crossfire [PvP Training | Professional] - Rapid Fire [Part 9]"

Also, having more weapons (like in a Battleship), you might include the key (3) as well, so that the Rapid Fire might work. However, a perfectly equipped VHF works great
with just 1 & 2 keys.

PS: Fire Weapon 7 (E) & 8 (R) are usually where my Torpedos and Cruise Disruptors are located, that's why they are set as these keys and the Q key
are my Missiles. My other keys are as follows:
Q - Missiles
Shift + E - Mine Dropper
Z - Engine Kill
X - Reverse
Tab - Thruster

Tip 2:
If you don't use God Mode (like myself), and you want to avoid being stopped by NPC Cruise Disruptors while in a Cruise Speed, do an Engine Kill first and then hit the cruise speed (Shift + W).
By doing an Engine Kill prior to hitting Cruise Speed, the enemies will think that you have stopped your engine therefore not fire any CDs (Cruise Disruptors) at you.
If you don't know how to perform an Engine Kill, please watch my video "Freelancer - Crossfire PvP Training: Beginners" or "Freelancer: Crossfire [PvP Training | Advanced] - Engine Kill [Part 5]".

Tip 3:
If you have a good gaming mouse with multiple buttons, you might also enable the Vertical Strafes (while having your Horizontal ones at default (A/D)).
